30 그 성읍의 방백 스불이 에벳의 아들 가알의 말을 듣고 노하여 31 사자들을 아비멜렉에게 가만히 보내어 이르되 보소서 에벳의 아들 가알과 그의 형제들이 세겜에 이르러 그 성읍이 당신을 대적하게 하니 32 당신은 당신과 함께 있는 백성과 더불어 밤에 일어나 밭에 매복하였다가 33 아침 해 뜰 때에 당신이 일찍 일어나 이 성읍을 엄습하면 가알 및 그와 함께 있는 백성이 나와서 당신을 대적하리니 당신은 기회를 보아 그에게 행하소서 하니 34 아비멜렉과 그와 함께 있는 모든 백성이 밤에 일어나 네 떼로 나누어 세겜에 맞서 매복하였더니 35 에벳의 아들 가알이 나와서 성읍 문 입구에 설 때에 아비멜렉과 그와 함께 있는 백성이 매복하였던 곳에서 일어난지라 36 가알이 그 백성을 보고 스불에게 이르되 보라 백성이 산 꼭대기에서부터 내려오는도다 하니 스불이 그에게 이르되 네가 산 그림자를 사람으로 보았느니라 하는지라 37 가알이 다시 말하여 이르되 보라 백성이 밭 가운데를 따라 내려오고 또 한 떼는 므오느님 상수리나무 길을 따라 오는도다 하니 38 스불이 그에게 이르되 네가 전에 말하기를 아비멜렉이 누구이기에 우리가 그를 섬기리요 하던 그 입이 이제 어디 있느냐 이들이 네가 업신여기던 그 백성이 아니냐 청하노니 이제 나가서 그들과 싸우라 하니 39 가알이 세겜 사람들보다 앞에 서서 나가 아비멜렉과 싸우다가 40 아비멜렉이 그를 추격하니 그 앞에서 도망하였고 부상하여 엎드러진 자가 많아 성문 입구까지 이르렀더라 41 아비멜렉은 아루마에 거주하고 스불은 가알과 그의 형제들을 쫓아내어 세겜에 거주하지 못하게 하더니 42 이튿날 백성이 밭으로 나오매 사람들이 그것을 아비멜렉에게 알리니라 43 아비멜렉이 자기 백성을 세 무리로 나누어 밭에 매복시켰더니 백성이 성에서 나오는 것을 보고 일어나 그들을 치되 44 아비멜렉과 그 떼는 돌격하여 성문 입구에 서고 두 무리는 밭에 있는 자들에게 돌격하여 그들을 죽이니 45 아비멜렉이 그 날 종일토록 그 성을 쳐서 마침내는 점령하고 거기 있는 백성을 죽이며 그 성을 헐고 소금을 뿌리니라.

30 When Zebul, the ruler of the city, heard the words of Gaal the son of Ebed, his anger was aroused. 31 And he sent messengers to Abimelech secretly, saying, "Take note! Gaal the son of Ebed and his brothers have come to Shechem; and here they are, fortifying the city against you. 32 "Now therefore, get up by night, you and the people who are with you, and lie in wait in the field. 33 "And it shall be, as soon as the sun is up in the morning, that you shall rise early and rush upon the city; and when he and the people who are with him come out against you, you may then do to them as you find opportunity." 34 So Abimelech and all the people who were with him rose by night, and lay in wait against Shechem in four companies. 35 When Gaal the son of Ebed went out and stood in the entrance to the city gate, Abimelech and the people who were with him rose from lying in wait. 36 And when Gaal saw the people, he said to Zebul, "Look, people are coming down from the tops of the mountains!" But Zebul said to him, "You see the shadows of the mountains as if they were men." 37 So Gaal spoke again and said, "See, people are coming down from the center of the land, and another company is coming from the Diviners' Terebinth Tree." 38 Then Zebul said to him, "Where indeed is your mouth now, with which you said, 'Who is Abimelech, that we should serve him?' Are not these the people whom you despised? Go out, if you will, and fight with them now." 39 So Gaal went out, leading the men of Shechem, and fought with Abimelech. 40 And Abimelech chased him, and he fled from him; and many fell wounded, to the very entrance of the gate. 41 Then Abimelech dwelt at Arumah, and Zebul drove out Gaal and his brothers, so that they would not dwell in Shechem. 42 And it came about on the next day that the people went out into the field, and they told Abimelech. 43 So he took his people, divided them into three companies, and lay in wait in the field. And he looked, and there were the people, coming out of the city; and he rose against them and attacked them. 44 Then Abimelech and the company that was with him rushed forward and stood at the entrance of the gate of the city; and the other two companies rushed upon all who were in the fields and killed them. 45 So Abimelech fought against the city all that day; he took the city and killed the people who were in it; and he demolished the city and sowed it with salt.
